The Year 7 Week Without Walls (WWW) programme in Purwokerto provided students with an enriching and memorable learning experience, offering them the opportunity to explore the natural environment, discover local cultural traditions, and develop essential life skills beyond the classroom.

Throughout the programme, students participated in a variety of team-building activities designed to strengthen friendships, encourage collaboration, and enhance communication skills. Through engaging challenges and group games, they learned the importance of teamwork, mutual trust, and supporting one another. These shared experiences helped foster stronger bonds among students while creating lasting memories.

The programme also allowed students to discover the natural beauty of Purwokerto and its surrounding areas. From visiting picturesque waterfalls and exploring rivers to experiencing the tranquillity of pine forests, students gained first-hand exposure to the region’s rich natural environment. They also explored the diversity of local plant life, developing a greater appreciation for biodiversity and the importance of environmental conservation. These outdoor experiences encouraged curiosity, observation, and a deeper understanding of the relationship between humans and the natural world.

In addition to exploring nature, students were introduced to the region’s rich cultural heritage and traditional livelihoods. They had the opportunity to learn to play traditional Javanese gamelan instruments, experience the process of making jenang, a traditional Indonesian sweet, and discover how tempeh and palm sugar are produced. Students also took part in rice planting and learned about freshwater fish farming, gaining valuable insights into traditional agricultural practices and sustainable food production.

These hands-on activities provided meaningful opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. By engaging directly with local traditions and communities, students developed a greater appreciation for Indonesia’s cultural diversity, local knowledge, and the skills and dedication involved in producing everyday goods and food.

Overall, the Year 7 Week Without Walls programme was much more than a school trip. It provided students with an opportunity to learn through exploration, strengthen friendships, develop independence, and broaden their perspectives. By stepping beyond their usual learning environment, students returned with new knowledge, valuable experiences, and a deeper appreciation of both the natural world and Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.
