Parent Orientation on Assessments in IB PYP

To strengthen the home-school partnership and deepen parental understanding of the learning process, Beacon Academy hosted a session for Junior School parents this week, focusing on the “How and Why” of assessments in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP).

The session aimed to demystify the unique approach to assessments in the PYP, which is distinct from traditional methods. It was designed to help parents better understand how their children’s learning is assessed and why the PYP emphasizes a holistic view of student development.

Parents were introduced to the different types of assessments that take place throughout the year. Parents were shown examples of different assessments and how teachers observe and give feedback to students on ways to collaborate, reflect, and take creative approaches to problem-solving—skills that are vital in the 21st century. This approach not only nurtures well-rounded individuals but also fosters a
lifelong love of learning.

Beacon Academy’s PYP assessment session is part of a broader initiative to create more opportunities for parental involvement and understanding of the IB curriculum.

Through sessions like these, Beacon Academy continues to lead the way in fostering collaboration between parents and teachers—nurturing confident, capable learners who are prepared for the future.
